WK Squee Rules & Intro

WK Squee Intro and Rules Post

Welcome to wk_squee, a challenge community dedicated to all things Weiss! (And by “Weiss,” we also mean all things Schwarz, Kritiker, Side B, and so on.)

This community is open for sign-ups. All submissions must be emailed to the mods (wk.squee@gmail.com), in the proper format, by midnight (PST) on January 1st, 2009.

Voting for the five categories will take place from January 7th to the 14th, and winners will be announced on January 15th.

1. Fics must be at least 1,000 words long (except for entries in the drabble category, which must be 100 words long – no more, no less).

2. Sign up under the lot prompt(s) that you want to write for. You may sign up for more than one prompt if you wish. Please note that comments to the prompt posts will be screened to maintain anonymity.

3. The mods will post all fics to maintain anonymity. And because we just like knowing things that you don’t. Heh.

4. Fics must be spell-checked and proofed. We strongly encourage the use of a beta, and if you do use one, we ask that you give your beta credit. SHOW YOUR BETA SOME LOVE! (Don't worry; if you do use a beta, we'll hide his or her name until the winners are revealed to make sure you stay anonymous.)

5. Fics must be received by midnight (PST) on January 1st, 2009.

6. Fics must be formatted for LJ, meaning that writers must include any and all HTML tags appropriate for LJ in their fics.

7. Fics must be submitted via email as .rtf or .txt attachments. If we can’t open your fic, we can’t post it!

8. Any fic that is unbeta’d or which contains formatting, grammar, or punctuation problems that are distracting to readers will be returned to the writer. You will have 24 hours to re-beta/reformat/rewrite your fic and resubmit it.

9. Flame comments will not be tolerated or counted for the comment prize. (Yeah, we’re having a prize for commenting. Whee! Please note: The mods will award this prize at their discretion.)

10. Sign up for prompts here (you may sign up for more than one prompt):

Merchandise lot 1 - "Pale Blue Sky" prompt
Merchandise lot 2 - "Unsavory" prompt
Merchandise lot 3 - "Black and White" prompt
Merchandise lot 4 - Prompt-free (write what you want!)
Drabble lot - 100 words only (prompt-free)
Comments lot (no sign-up; will be awarded at mods' discretion)

11. Fics must be submitted with the following headings, which should be filled out appropriately. Please note: It is particularly important that you accurately fill out the “Rating” and “Warnings” slots in your headings. Failure to do so will result in your fic being returned to you for reformatting.

Author’s Notes:

12. Feel free to leave comments to this post or to contact the mods if you have any questions.

13.  Fics must use the prompts, not merely be inspired by them, to be considered for the prizes. This saves the mods from having to be arbiters of topicality and ensures fairness across all prompt lots. Sorry for any confusion!

14. Go forth and write awesome fics. And – most importantly – have fun!

This sounds kind of awesome! I have two quick questions just for some clarification before signing up:

1) So the prompts are just the lines "pale blue sky," "unsavory," and "black & white," without anything additional? So as long as we use this prompt as inspiration for the fic, we're good to go?

2) Is there anything verboten to include in a fic? A lot of fests will forbid certain squicks, like chan for instance, and I'm not sure if you're leaving this open to all ages or if it's 18+.

That's all! :) I'm looking forward to the fest.

Thanks for the questions; they help you and us!

1) They are indeed. We're going to ask that you include them IN the fics so that everyone's working with the same limitations. We're going to clarify that in the rules.

2) No, nothing is verboten. Use your discretion, of course, and it is essential that you accurately rate your fic and include any and all warnings for your fic. That includes non-con, dub-con, shota, tentacles (ha!), incest, and so on. Unpleasant surprises are not encouraged. Readers like to know what they're in for.

I'm very exdcited - but I have some questions (and I just got off work, so pardon me if I'm a little on the slow side right now.)

- where, exactly, do we sign up?
- do the fics need to actually contain the words in the prompt, or just the idea/be inspired by - ('ve seen it go both ways
- and this is a yaoi-friendly contest, right? (since it's Weiss, I'm guessing it is...)

Thanks. ^^

Questions are good!

You sign up under the post designated for each prompt. You'll see the links under rule 10, "Sign up for prompts here." Click on the links to be taken to the prompt posts, and then choose which ones you want to sign up for once you've peeked at the swag.

The fics do need to contain the words - it'll be fair if we do it that way. We're going to post that in the rules in a few.

And hahahaha! Yes, of course it is! Just make sure that your fic is clearly and accurately rated and that any necessary warnings are called out.

Great. ^^ And - sorry to be so nitpicky - but does it need to be the actual phrase, word-for-word, or can we rearrange it a bit?
Nov. 25th, 2008 04:50 pm (UTC)
No worries! It does need to be the phrase, word for word. Of course, you can capitalize however you like, and if you want to change the "&" in "black & white" so that it's "black and white," that's fine. But in order for things to be fair and equal across the board, we're asking that people keep the prompts we've given.

Generally speaking, naming betas tends to identify the author of a fic. I like being able to name my betas, but I'm not sure how to do it in a situation like this. Please, could that be clarified?
Nov. 24th, 2008 11:44 pm (UTC)
Since the mods are posting the fics, we'll remove both your name and your beta's name until after voting has closed. At that point, we'll go back and insert your name and your beta's name in the headings.
Nov. 24th, 2008 11:48 pm (UTC)
Great to see this happening. :)

Not sure about rule (4) though. Not everyone uses a beta, or agrees exactly what one is (editor? first reader? encourager? enabler? *g*) or folks might have trouble finding one who can deliver in time for the contest, especially if they write close to the wire - and in the holiday season. I know betas can be useful but it's a personal kind of relationship and not for everyone. Plus, as therck says, it could identify the author.

Just a thought.

Haha! I brought up those same points earlier (though not as excellently, sigh) and was totally shot down. But since you're all eloquent and stuff, the majority of the mods have rethought their position on requiring betas. We're revising that rule.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful input!

You're welcome, and thanks for adjusting the rules. :)

In regards to rule #6 -- does this include the tags for an lj-cut?
Nov. 25th, 2008 02:51 am (UTC)
Yes, please!

Is there a sign up deadline? Right now, I don't know that I can commit to anything, but I will probably keep thinking about the prompts (and the prompt free category) and will write if I have time. Can I suddenly sign up a week before the deadline for getting the fics in?
Nov. 25th, 2008 02:11 pm (UTC)
No sign up deadline, and no penalty if you do sign up and aren't able to produce a fic in time. This is supposed to be fun, not something to worry about.
Nov. 28th, 2008 02:02 pm (UTC)
I don't know if anyone's asked this; someone might have and I simply didn't see it though.. Are crossovers alright? I was thinking of having them in a different world; you wouldn't need to know the fandom, I would explain everything that was necessary for the fic.
Nov. 28th, 2008 07:10 pm (UTC)
AUs are fine, say, crawford has a death note and aya tries to figure out who kira is, but no crossover fics like Weiß try and assassinate Light/Kira, that kind of thing.
Nov. 28th, 2008 07:14 pm (UTC)
I was contemplating merging the Weiss world with Stargate SG-1 actually.. Because I am a nerd like that.

It wouldn't change anything for the actual Weiss characters; I'd be playing a bit with Schwarz's background but it wouldn't affect the timeline or anything. And everything I change would be explained in detail.

Would that be alright, or no?
Nov. 28th, 2008 07:37 pm (UTC)
are colonel jack o'neill or the doci going to show up? because then that is a no, but if schwarz are commanders or part of the jaffa guard and Weiß has to fight against them, that would be alright.
Nov. 28th, 2008 07:40 pm (UTC)
The extent anyone from the actual SG-1 cast will be showing up would simply be in transmissions, or brief mentions to explain things. This isn't an AU, but something that would take place alongside both the SG-1 timeline and the Weiss timeline; it wouldn't be that Schwarz are Jaffa, I'm making them something else SG-1-related and having their current mission on earth relating to Weiss and Esset.
Nov. 30th, 2008 07:56 pm (UTC)
sorry for the delay in replying - we had a debate about it and i'm afraid that would be a no. i don't want to be in a position that forces us to make a judgement call on whether your non-Weiß characters are minor or prominent characters.

A question, if I may (sorry if this has already been addressed somewhere). Is it all right to submit a fic that is a sequel to an earlier fic? I can provide a link to the earlier part if needed.
Dec. 27th, 2008 04:15 am (UTC)
Because this challenge is anonymous, I'm afraid that a sequel wouldn't work. If it can stand alone and doesn't contain anything that would identify you as the writer, then of course you can submit it. If that's not the case (and it sounds like it isn't), we'd prefer that you not submit the sequel.
